J RUDDOCK ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture
What is
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years as a modality of traditional Chinese medicine. The human body is a harmonious balance of yin and yang. These two forces are opposing but depend on each other to keep the body healthy and balanced.

Energy called "Qi" ( pronounced chi) flows along pathways, known as meridians, throughout the body. The constant flow of energy keeps yin and yang in balance. When this energy becomes blocked, it causes disruption which can lead to pain, lack of function, or illness.
Acupuncture works by inserting thin needles into specific points on the body known as acu-points. Different techniques are then used to manipulate the needles which moves Qi and restore that balance throughout the body.

Expect
What To
Most people are surprised by how gentle and relaxing acupuncture feels. Sensations vary, but here's what you might experience during and after a treatment:
During Needle Placement
Because acupuncture needles are very thin, they are almost painless on insertion. This experience is very different from getting a shot or having blood drawn. Here's what you can expect when the needles are being inserted:

-
Little to no pain when the needle goes in
-
A slight pinch or tap that quickly fades
-
A dull ache, heaviness or pressure at the point
-
Tingling, warmth or a mild buzzing sensation
-
A feeling that travels along the arm, leg or body
These sensations are normal and are often a sign that the point is being stimulated effectively. These sensations can come and go throughout the treatment

During The Treatment

Once the needles are all set (usually for 15-30 minutes), most people transition into a state of deep relaxation. It is very common for people to:
-
Feel light or floaty - as though your body has lost its sense of weight
-
Notice brief muscle twitches - quick, natural releases of tension near a needle sight
-
Drift into an "acu-nap" - a heavy lidded half-awake, half-asleep state of deep dozing
After The Treatment
After an acupuncture session, most people experience the "post acupuncture glow". Feelings can range from a total energy boost to a strong need for a nap. Because acupuncture shifts your nervous system from "fight or flight" into "rest and digest", your body begins to process physical and emotional changes immediately. Here's what most people typically feel:
-
Many people report feeling pleasantly relaxed, calm, and euphoric
-
Some may feel unusually tired after the session
-
You may experience an emotional release of stuck or pent-up feelings
-
Occasionally, there may be a lingering dull ache at the needle site, similar to soreness a good massage
-
The most common outcome is a significantly deeper and more restful sleep on the night of treatment
